Glossary of Concussion-related Terms

 

Term Means
Acceptable Baseline A test performance that has satisfied the Axon Sports task completion and integrity criteria
After Injury test A test taken post or After Injury
Attention The main cognitive function measured by the Identification task
Axon Sports CCAT Axon Sports Computerized Cognitive Assessment Tool
Baseline test A test that captures an Athlete’s current level of cognition
Cognitive / cognition Thinking
Cognitive test Any test that evaluates thinking

Concussion

International experts define concussion as "a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanical forces -- either a direct blow to the head, face, or neck; or a blow elsewhere on the body with an 'impulsive' force transmitted to the head." In other words, a concussion is a brain injury caused by traumatic force.
Concussion symptoms The observed and reported changes in sensations, feelings and behaviors that occur after a concussion
Learning / memory The main cognitive function measured by the One Card Learning task
Neurocognitive test See cognitive test
Neuropsychological test A cognitive test that has been interpreted to inform about brain behavior relationships
Processing speed The main cognitive function measured by the Detection task
Responsible adult An adult who is prepared to supervise a Athlete during a test, encourage his or her best effort, and attest to the fact that the Athlete named on the test actually took the test
Sport-related head injury An injury to the head that is sustained in sport, whether or not there is concussion or suspected concussion
Working memory The main cognitive function measured by the One Back task
